Proper set up of external domain

Greetings! I have registered domain elsewhere.

DNS needs CNAME set up like: [name].000webhostapp.com. I entered this.

Question 1: Do I need name servers pointed as well or I can I leave registrars?

My bigger question is I had older DNS records established. What do I put in place of the older IP in dns “A” etc?

there is no A record any more. use CNAME record

That would be the correct setup 1 CNAME set at yourwebsite.000webhostapp.com yes.
